This programme offers a second chance to Grade 12 students to improve their marks in the core subject areas of Mathematics and Physical Science. These are key gateway subjects for entry into most tertiary education programmes. Two additional subjects, English Home Language and Life Sciences, are offered as optional extra upgrade subjects, thereby presenting students with the opportunity to make a significant improvement in their APS points.

The programme provides students with intensive subject-based tuition in preparation for rewriting their NSC or IEB examinations, which they will do at their former education institutions, at the end of 2022.

Examinations:

Midlands Community College provides intensive and quality tuition geared towards a rewrite of the National Senior Certificate examinations. We do not offer the opportunity to redo the school-based assessment (portfolio) mark. Students’ existing portfolio marks will be carried over.

Students will write mid-year and trials examinations at the College, in order to monitor progress, identify areas which need additional attention, and assist in developing examination technique.

Students are required to register at their previous examination centres for: Nov 2022 Final NSC Examinations as a Part-time / Repeater Candidate.

Please note – that this programme is not for students who want to write in June.

Additional Courses (Included in Cost):

International Computer Drivers Licence

Students will have the opportunity to register for two ICDL modules, Excel (spreadsheets) and PowerPoint (presentations), for which internationally recognised certificates will be issued by ICDL on successful completion of the modules. These courses are built into the timetable, and attendance is required. They offer students a valuable opportunity to enhance their digital competency, which is integral to success in higher education. Coaching for Success in the 21st Century

Students attend a 10-week programme aimed at developing their skills and competencies for navigating their entry into higher education and beyond. We present a course of study skills and self-reflection techniques, to develop capacity for thinking about higher order questions, as well as examining personal qualities that build resilience, awareness and self-management. Students who complete an upgrading year at Midlands Community College have a higher first year success rate and overall completion rate in tertiary education, as they are better equipped to cope with the challenges of higher study.
